Your Plan and Your AI Allowance
🎯 Purpose
Understand what the free allowance covers, what happens when it runs out, and how to move to the paid plan — including exactly what AIOS does and does not know about your payment details.
📋 Before you start
Nothing. Every account starts on the free plan and nothing has to be set up for it to work.
🧮 What the free plan is
The free plan is the whole note-first product with the assistant switched off. Your notes, the plan, the brief, the calendar and routines, projects, search, private notes, images, the news reader, reminders and the phone app. None of it is a trial and none of it expires.
What a free account does not have is the part that calls an AI model: asking AIOS a question and getting an answer, choosing which notes a model may read, and generating SOPs or articles.
The prompt box still works, and that is not a technicality. Most of what you type there never touches a model — a capture, a completion, a reschedule, a reorder — and every one of those still runs on a free account, writes to your note, and answers you. What you get instead of an answer to a question is one line saying that part needs a paid plan, plus a note in today's System Log saying the same. Anything the same message did has already happened.
Why it is off rather than metered. The safeguards around what a model may see are still being finished, and every call costs real money. Reporting feedback is how we choose who to invite to early access for the AI and for custom tools and features — press SUBMIT FEEDBACK in the system bar menu.
You can see your plan at any time: YOUR PLAN in the system bar on a computer, or More → Your Plan on a phone.
Only AI answers ever cost anything. Nothing else in AIOS uses a model:
| Uses your allowance | Does not |
|---|---|
| Asking AIOS a question in the prompt box | Writing, editing and saving notes |
| Asking it to write an article or an SOP | Capturing a task or an event by typing one |
| A request it cannot interpret deterministically | Finishing something, moving it, rescheduling it |
| The Recommended Plan and the Daily Brief | |
| The calendar, carry-forward, search, the notebook |
That table is the whole design. Most of what you do in a day never touches a model — a line like Dentist tomorrow at 2:15pm is read by a parser, written to your note and put in your calendar without asking anything. Those actions are free, and they stay free.
The figure is an ESTIMATE. It is worked out from the model providers' published prices, which this product has not been invoiced against. It is close, it is honest, and it is deliberately not called a bill.
🪜 Steps — when the allowance runs out
- Ask AIOS something. Instead of an answer you get a short message and the Your Plan dialog opens.
- Read what it says still works. It is not a figure of speech: the same message appears in today's System Log, and anything the same message did — a capture, a completion, a reschedule — has already happened and is already in your note.
- Press UPGRADE if you want to keep asking. You are sent to the payment provider's own page.
- Pay there. You come back to AIOS and your plan updates within a few seconds.
If UPGRADE is not shown, this deployment has no payment provider set up yet and the dialog says so rather than offering a button that cannot work.
🔐 What AIOS knows about your payment details
Nothing. There is no card field anywhere in AIOS and there never will be one.
- UPGRADE and MANAGE BILLING both send you to the provider's own hosted page. Your card is typed in over there, on their site.
- AIOS stores two things afterwards: an opaque customer reference and whether your subscription is currently active. No number, no last four, no expiry, no name on the card.
- MANAGE BILLING takes you back to the provider to change a card or cancel, for the same reason — a cancel button of our own would be a second version of the truth, and the first time the two disagreed somebody would either be charged after cancelling or keep access after their card stopped.
🧾 What each plan gets
- Free — the whole note-first product, with no AI answers. Everything deterministic, for good.
- Paid — all of that plus the assistant: asking AIOS questions with your own notes as context, choosing what it may read, generating SOPs and articles, and the prompt tools. Double the AI context budget, access to the stronger models, and answers are not capped.
If you are on a trial with an allowance, the dialog shows a bar and $X of $10.00 used. That is an estimate, worked out from the providers' published prices — close, honest, and deliberately not called a bill.
🗑️ Closing your account
You can delete your account yourself, at any time, without contacting anybody.
Two places, and they do exactly the same thing:
- In the app — YOUR PLAN → CLOSE ACCOUNT. On a phone it is also on the More page, under Your Plan.
- In any browser —
caligoarts.com/aios/delete-account.html. You do not need the app installed. Sign in there and the same screen appears.
It asks for two things and they check different things. Your password proves the account is yours — a session left open on a shared computer is exactly how this gets pressed by the wrong person. Typing DELETE proves you read the screen.
What goes, and it is everything: your notes and images, your projects and private notes, your tasks, events and routines, your settings, quick links, weather and context choices, your usage records, your newsletter subscription, and anything you had submitted for review but not published. Then the account itself.
It is immediate. There is no waiting period, nothing is archived, and there is no way to undo it. The screen tells you the size of what you are about to remove before you confirm.
The one thing that stays: an article of yours already published to the Developer's Notebook. That is a public page with its own web address, and other sites may already link to it — so taking it down is a separate request rather than something that happens quietly when you close an account. Email CaligoArts@gmail.com and it will be removed. Anything still waiting for review is deleted with everything else.
If you have a paid subscription it is cancelled first. If for any reason it cannot be cancelled, nothing is deleted and AIOS tells you why — an account will never be removed while a card can still be charged for it.
✅ How to verify
- Open YOUR PLAN (system bar) or More → Your Plan (phone). It names your plan.
- Type
Dentist tomorrow at 2pmin the prompt box and check the calendar. It is there — that worked on any plan, and it cost nothing. - Ask AIOS a question. On a free plan you get one line saying answers need a paid plan, and today's System Log says so too. On a paid plan you get an answer.
- Open YOUR PLAN → CLOSE ACCOUNT and read the summary, then press CANCEL. It lists what would be removed and counts your own files — nothing happens until you type
DELETEand give your password.
⚠️ What went wrong
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "AI answers need a paid plan" | You are on the free plan | Everything except AI answers still works, including capture and completion from the prompt box. Press SUBMIT FEEDBACK — reporting feedback is how we choose who to invite to early access |
| "You have used the free allowance" | You are on a trial and the $10 is spent | Everything except AI answers still works. Upgrade if you want answers back |
| "You are close to the end of the free allowance" | Past 80% | Nothing yet — it is a warning, not a stop |
| No UPGRADE button | This deployment has no payment provider configured | Nothing you can fix; the dialog says so on purpose rather than showing a dead button |
| "Your last payment did not go through" | Your provider is retrying the card | Your access is unchanged while it retries. Use MANAGE BILLING to fix the card |
| Paid, but the dialog still says Free | The payment landed a moment before the confirmation | Close and reopen the dialog; it re-reads every time |
| "Usage metering is unavailable" | The server cannot read the usage table | Nothing is being capped while that is true. It is reported rather than guessed at |
| "That password is not correct" when closing the account | The confirmation password did not match | Nothing was deleted. Try again, or use Forgot Key on the sign-in page first |
| "Your subscription could not be cancelled, so nothing was deleted" | The payment provider could not be reached | Nothing was deleted. Cancel from MANAGE BILLING, then close the account |
| Closed the account but an article is still on the site | That article was published, and published pages stay up | Email CaligoArts@gmail.com to have it taken down |
